This is my new favourite thing ever
ATG Alumni Week 125
Theme: CrossoverSo this one should be fairly obvious. Once I got to thinking about grey feathers I couldn’t think of anyone better to fit the role here. So it’s not just that poor ol’ Ditzy/Derpy is becoming my go-to not-really-obscure reference character. XDTried some new things as regarding hair, I think it …kinda works? Dunno. And some new stuff with clouds that I think turned out rather nicely. Not perfect, of course, but not too shabby.Thoughts?
>:( this makes me angry with an accent
I will never not be super pissed off about this issue.
There was so much positive potential with a character like Derpy too.
Yes, POSITIVE potential. Learning experiences. Character growth. You know, all that stuff that kids shows are supposed to have?
Or “There’s a zombie on Bon Bon”? You decide!More background ponies in costume for the most weeny of Hallows.
I love this :D
Signal boosting because WHAT THE FUCK BRAVO?
How was this determined to be okay? You want to make fun of Bronies? Sure, the fandom is more than ripe for ribbing and parody. But using your national platform to mock, deride, question and generally insult a stranger’s gender presentation?
What would happen if you insert any other minority, disability or oppressed group into this scenario? Is it still funny? Is it still a joke? Or are there different guidelines for dealing with transsexuals in the official standards and practices of The Bravo Network and its parent company NBC?
I understand that shows like this get their mileage from comedic shock and awe. When you focus on a celebrity or someone in the public eye, their ego and persona is big enough to take the hit. Not to mention they’re making their living as an object of interest and discussion.
But Tinker is a private individual who took part in a documentary. Airing national footage of these unfunny pricks mocking her is absolutely reprehensible. There is no ambiguity- this was mean-spirited in the extreme and meant solely to wring out an “OH NO YOU DIDN’T” moment at Tinker’s expense.
I know, the canned response to anything like this is always that those involved are exercising their right to free speech- and that is true. The Brony doc is a matter of public record and Bravo is within their rights to discuss it in whatever manner they wish. But the point is not whether they should be censored, it’s whether they should have known better and perhaps chosen not to air personally directed insults to begin with. It’s not a matter of legality, it’s a matter of simple decency or at least a modicum of empathy. Faculties Bravo and the individuals behind The People’s Couch seem to be utterly bereft of.
Skip forwards to 1:25 and there’s a clip of me talking, followed immediately by some “”“unscripted”“” (ha) reactions from the people on the couch: (emphasis mine)
Black shirt guy: “Izzat a man or a woman?”
Blue/white shirt guy: “Yes.”
Other two guys: (*laughter*)
Blue/white Shirt Guy (grinning): “It is a man or a woman.”
[Cut to another set of couches]
Pink shirt lady (pointing, presumably at screen): “That was a man!”
White shirt guy (grinning): “No it wasn’t.”
Pink shirt lady (gesturing at guy) “You’re always wrong when I say it’s a man.”
White shirt guy: “It’s not a man!”
Pink shirt lady: “That’s a MAN, baby!”
(They then move onto other topics of attack, starting with calling a male brony dressed up as a unicorn a “man-i-corn.”)
But wait— that’s not all.
There’s also some rather lovely homophobia targeted not at me, but at bronies in general, delivered (ironically, but not surprisingly— self-hating homophobia) with a bit of a lisp. Skip forwards to 2:43 for blue-and-white-shirt-guy delivering this line:
"Like, I’m all for being gay, but that’s TOO gay."
Cue laughter all around.
This is evidently considered totally acceptable in 2013 America— for a nationwide television network to devote half a dozen lines to mocking one transgender private citizen for an ambiguous appearance, then tar-and-feather hundreds of thousands of bronies as being “too gay”.
This isn’t KKK TV. This isn’t the Westboro Baptist Church. This is Bravo.
PLEASE REBLOG. This isn’t acceptable. People need to be aware that Bravo thinks it’s okay to mock individual trans people and crack gay jokes for cheap laughs.
"Something is different and I don’t understand it so it’s bad and we should condemn and mock it to make us feel good about ourselves."
This is horrible and disgusting. People have nothing better to do than belittle and hurt the innocent?
